Understand Me - The Communication Library

Understand Me - The Communication Library

Do you know someone who has communication difficulties? Find out how you can reserve resources that can help, including devices for recording personal messages and talking photo albums.

Anyone who needs help with communication can borrow a range of free resources from any West Sussex library – all you need is a library card.

Communication can be difficult for some people, particularly those with disabilities. Many resources are available to support effective communication. These include simple flashcards and devices for recording personal messages.

Some of these resources support people who use Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC).

Who can borrow these resources?

This service may be of interest to:

  • adults with learning disabilities
  • adults with other speech or communication difficulties
  • people living with dementia and their families, friends and carers.
  • parents/carers of children with communication difficulties
  • professionals working with any of these groups.

To see the resources, view the Understand Me catalogue. Pictures and information about each item are included.

How to borrow the item

Anyone can borrow the communication resources using a library card. If you do not have a library card, you can join online. When you have joined, return to this page and use your temporary library card number to make your request.

To make a request for an item, complete the Communication Resources online form. You will need to enter your library card number, details about the person who will be using the resource and which library you would like to collect it from.

You will be contacted by email or phone when your item is ready for collection. Items are borrowed in exactly the same way as books, using your library card and the self-service kiosks. You can borrow items for three weeks, but if no-one else is waiting for the item you can renew it.

You can sign up to receive an email reminder to return or renew your item, but you will not be charged any late fees. To sign up for library email alerts, see our FAQ page
