Notes:
There used to be an empty chair at the back of my class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it. He's eight years old (just like me), but he's very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn't like sweets - not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite! But the truth is, Ahmet really isn't very strange at all.

Although this is written for children of primary school age, it is a wonderful book that everyone should read. It is narrated by a school child who tries to befriend a new boy in the class. As the story progresses it turns out that Ahmet is a Syrian refugee who became separated from his parents during the struggle to reach a safe place. The author deftly covers issues of bigotry, bullying and misconceptions, but counters this with characters that have wonderful empathy and different perspectives. Despite being a serious subject, reading the book took me through a whole range of emotions and provoked both tears and laughter.
