[Interviewer] “What was life like in the trenches?

Well hell!  Well it's a job to tell you know, just standing in the pouring rain cos in the winter, I'm talking about the winter, the duckboards everything there and used to bring the food to the trenches over the top, just two slices of bread or something with a bit of bacon between it all sorts of things like that. In the trenches we used to be there for about a week I think, then went back two miles behind the lines for a rest, that's what happened every few weeks.”

[Interviewer] “How long was the rest period?

About a week”

[Interviewer] “So you had sort of a week in the line?

Yes roughly that. I was only there for 3 months so I can't tell you a lot about it but the point was we did have a break in that 3 months, we did go to Amiens, that's what they called it, for a rest of a fortnight. That's where we mixed with people.”
