“I did have one very, very narrow escape. It wasn’t in High Wood, it was somewhere on the Somme. I was going over the top, when I was in Charlie Platoon, and their Sargent was missing and their Officers, I don’t know where the hell they were. I was just approaching Jerry’s trench, I stepped on a slight depression. As I stepped down, a bullet went right through my steel helmet. It went in there and went out through the back of the helmet. All I had was a bit of broken skin and a headache. If that depression hadn’t been there, it would have gone through there.”
