[Interviewer] “Did you have time to think, you know, this is going to be it?

To be frightened you mean?  That's a very good question.  I think I was sweating so hard to try and get the aeroplane down that I didn't really have time to be frightened, no.  I was very lucky because I was drenched in petrol and my left arm was just bruised a little bit but otherwise I was perfectly alright. Talking of fright I think there isn't a single airman alive hat wouldn't admit that he hasn't been frightened.  I remember once or twice I was alone at 6000 feet, I did feel frightened and I closed the throttle and got down near to the earth and suddenly got near the earth and everything was marvellous again”
