There is a certificate, 28 Nov. 1798, of contract of Charles Groome of Steyning, gent., for the redemption of Land Tax on his property in Steyning, and there are attached certificates of the amount of the said Tax and property assessed (WISTON/2756). Jane Lamport of Steyning, spinster, conveyed a moiety in the property, 21 22 Jan. 1820, to her nephew, Thomas Groome of Steyning, gent., who, together with his father, Charles Groome, now had the entirety of the property (WISTON/2757, 2758). Thomas Groome conveyed part of the field, 16 Jan. 1841, to the vicar and churchwardens of the parish `to the use of the Managers for the time being of a School at Steyning which shall always be united to the National Society for promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church throughout England and Wales' (WISTON/2759; copy). There is an account of succession duty, 1857, on the death of Thomas Groome, involving the above field, and other property including Newham Farm (WISTON/2760). Charles Groome of Lyons Farm in Sompting and Broadwater, and the other trustees under the will of said Thomas Groome, conveyed the above field, together with Newham House and a garden or orchard, to the Rev. John Goring of Wiston; this conveyance, 29 Nov. 1858, in consideration of £1,650, includes a covenant to surrender a tenement and garden in Steyning late Groome's, formerly Bowler's, held of the manor of King's Barn, and has a marginal plan (WISTON/2761).
